BESA - Historic Photographic Exhibit - Opening Event - June 10 Sunday

The opening event for the BESA Exhibit will take place Sunday June 10 at 3pm Suffolk University Law School.

The honored guest speaker will be Ms Johanna Gerechter Neumann who was sheltered with her family in an Albanian home during World War II. Ms Neumann has made it her mission to tell audiences throughout Europe and the U.S. about the heroic efforts of Albanians to save Jews from the Holocaust.

This is a not to be missed opportunity to hear an inspiring, dynamic speaker, view the Besa Exhibit, an historic photographic exhibit of Albanians who saved Jews during World War II, and enjoy a delicious Albanian buffet prepared by Yada Yada Cafe and Bagel Bin Deli.

Help feed the hungry. Contact your State Senator for an additional $2,500,000 in funding for Massachusetts. Last week the Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee proposed to level fund the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP) core food line item at $11.5 million and its administrative line item at $1 million in FY13. The combined funding for the line items which provide food to 800 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters across the Commonwealth is $500,000 less than the House budget.  Senator Hart and Senator Downing filed an amendment to increase funding for the MEFAP foods to $14 million.  Please ask your MA State Senator to support their amendment  (#158 Section 2 2511-0105) today.   Locate your state senator here. Urge your MA State Senator to support Senate Amendment #158 (Section 2 2511-0105) to increase funding for MEFAP foods before Wednesday, May 23, 2012. Use these talking points to support your request: In recent years, the number of people using emergency food assistance in eastern Massachusetts has increased by 23 percent, yet funding for MEFAP has remained flat. Level funding combined with increased food costs reduces the amount of food that can be purchased using MEFAP funds - resulting in one million fewer meals distributed to those in need in 2012 alone. MEFAP is a reliable source of food such as meat, eggs, milk, and fresh produce for vulnerable populations including seniors and children. In addition, MEFAP dollars go back into the Massachusetts economy - supporting local growers and manufacturers. More than 800,000 people across Massachusetts utilize the state's emergency food assistance network. NEW YORK, New York, May 14, 2012 We are pleased to announce the launch of a new project Albanian American Success Stories, a collaboration between the Albanian Media Group, Fadil Berisha Studio, and American Councils for International Education’s Kosovo American Education Fund. The Albanian American Success Stories project showcases the successes of individuals in the Albanian-American community through various multi-media channels, highlighting the contributions they have made in business, politics, science, education, the arts, etc.  Individuals and their accomplishments will be presented in a full-color book, videotaped interviews on the AlbanianSuccessStories.com website, documentary and an annual awards gala to be held in January, 2013 honoring the participants in the project.

OBITUARY: WWII Vet Theodore J. Bittelari 1931-2012

Theodore J. Bittelari of Watertown, died on Wednesday May 9, 2012 after a long illness. Born in Watertown, MA at 46 Spring St, on March 22, 1931 and has lived there ever since. He was a retired Electrical Engineer for Fay, Spofford, & Thorndike of Burlington, MA. He served in the United States Air Force as an Airman 1st Class, serving four years and served in the Korean War for over one year. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal; the United Nations Service Medal; National Defense Medal; and the Korean Service Medal. He was the son of the late John T. and Christina (Lambert) Bittelari, the brother of Colonel Thomas J. Bittelari, of Framingham, MA, and the late William J. Bittelari, George J. Bittelari and sister Lillian (Bittelari) Pappas. He is survived by nephews and a niece John G. Bittelari of New Hampshire, Jeff Pappas of Groveland, MA, Mark Pappas of Cambridge, MA, Lisa Pappas of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Bryan Pappas of Portsmouth, New Hampshire and several grandnephews and a great grandnephew. He was a member of the Albanian-American War Veterans, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, The Watertown Elks, and the late Watertown Eagles. The Visiting Hours will be from 4p.m. to 8p.m. on Tuesday at the Nardone Funeral Home, 373 Main Street, Watertown, MA. Relatives & friends are kindly invited. Funeral Services will be at the Albanian-Orthodox Cathedral of St. George, 523 East Broadway, South Boston, MA, on Wednesday at 11a.m. Burial Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ted, may be made to the St. George Cathedral and/or the Salvation Army.
